There is one issue that may be the cause for both; especially in smaller crafts, there is not much room in the overhead bins.
This means that even if you have a seat reservation, you'll have to stick your hand luggage between your legs for the duration of flight if you come too late and all the bins are taken. Or you have to search the entire craft then, to find some space somewhere - in any case it's simpler to be early enough to have bins free...
Ist doch eine logische Konsequenz, oder? Wer als erster aus dem Bus raus ist, ist auch als erster im Flieger.
Wie slovon schon schrieb ... Platz fürs Handgepäck ist mit der einzige "vernünftige" Grund. Der smarte Häufig- bis Vielflieger nutzt dann aber Delivery at Aircraft und/oder hat vorher die Buchungslage geprüft, um abzuschätzen ob der Platz fürs Handgepäck eng wird oder die Maschine eh halb leer rumfliegt.
